Summer in Ohio brings many things, many of them related to contests of various types. In the last few weeks, 1812Blockhouse has shared stories of pageants, photo contests, band competitions, and even an event where facial hair enthusiasts met to vie for prizes.

Every contest needs a judge or two, and next week several of them are coming to Mansfield to cast a careful eye over all things colorful.

America in Bloom judges arrive on July 10 and 11, and will be looking at public and private efforts to beautify the community.

The judging is somewhat complex, involving the awarding of points in multiple categories. Currently, categories include heritage preservation, floral, landscaping, urban forestry/trees, environment, and overall impression. The Mansfield in Bloom group has spearheaded the effort to prepare for the visit.

Specific sites will be visited by the judges, including major local attractions ranging from the Cyclops Field’s “Field of Dreams” complex to Central Park downtown. Of course, Kingwood Center will be included. That shared, the catch-all, “overall impression” category includes the entire community. Citizens are asked to beautify yards and areas visible from the street.

Downtown, the light poles are newly decorated with hanging clusters of sweet potato and begonia vines.

At the Field of Dreams, hosts are hoping to hold a baseball contest during the judge’s visit.
