On Monday, Richland Source celebrated its fifth anniversary of providing Mansfield, Richland County, and now Ashland and Crawford Counties news and information.
When Richland Source arrived on the scene in June 2013, it rode the second wave of independent local online news launches across the country. It was the second of its kind to arrive locally, following MidOhioLive, and provided its readers with a product which emphasized general interest and positive news.
Since that time, Richland Source has gained a reputation for innovative promotion – from branded popcorn bags at local football games to Instagram filters to hosting large-scale political forums – and has expanded programming in the areas of “solutions journalism,” podcasting, and video creation. Earlier this year, it served as a coordinator for the #SXSW419 trip to Austin, Texas undertaken by local leaders interested in downtown revitalization.
Very few news sites of its type around the country enjoy the number of staff it employs compared to the market it serves, a testament to the strong private financial backing and the civic purpose that made it possible.
